Basics of Psycholinguistics

This course introduces psycholinguistics, focusing on how language is acquired, processed, and represented in the human mind and brain. It examines major theories of language development, the neural basis of language, the relationship between language and thought, linguistic determinism, and transformational–generative grammar. The course aims to develop a clear understanding of language as a cognitive and psychological process underlying human communication and behavior.

About Course

The Basics of Psycholinguistics course introduces how language works in the human mind and brain, focusing on processes like acquisition, comprehension, and production. It covers key theories of language development, how children learn language, and the neurological basis of linguistic abilities.

The course also explores the relationship between language and thought, including linguistic determinism, and introduces transformational–generative grammar. By the end, learners will gain a clear understanding of language as a cognitive and psychological system underlying human communication and behavior.

What You'll Learn

By the end of this course, you will be able to:
  • Define psycholinguistics and explain its significance in understanding language acquisition, comprehension, and production.
  • Identify key brain structures involved in language, including areas responsible for speech production, comprehension, and meaning- making, and explain their functions.
  • Analyze linguistic determinism and its impact on perception, cognition, and behavior.
  • Explain the principles of transformational and generative grammar and how they account for the human capacity to generate infinite meaningful sentences.
  • Apply psycholinguistic concepts to academic, clinical, and real-world contexts to enhance understanding of human communication and cognition.
