Core Concepts of Nursing

This course introduces students to nursing as a professional discipline, covering its historical development, definitions, education, practice, roles, and accountability. It presents the conceptual basis of nursing practice, including human needs, adaptation and homeostasis, health alterations, voluntary and involuntary processes, and nursing interventions through the nursing care process (assessment, diagnosis, planning, implementation, and evaluation). The course also explains the position of nurses within the national healthcare delivery system, its organization, administration, facilities, and personnel, while highlighting the role of international health and nursing organizations.

As this is an entry-level course for first-semester GBSN students, there are no formal nursing prerequisites or prior clinical experience required. The curriculum is intentionally designed to be the “ground zero” of the nursing program, welcoming learners from diverse academic backgrounds. Students only need general admission to the BSN program and a readiness to build a professional foundation in clinical science and patient-centered care from day one.
