Houdini Procedural Modeling Essentials

Houdini Procedural Modeling Essentials is a beginner-friendly pathway that introduces learners to node-based, procedural workflows in SideFX Houdini. Working through a single guided project — a fully procedural house — students learn to build primitive shapes, cut geometry to create architectural openings, add surface detail such as stone brick and roof tiles, and construct reusable window, door, and roof components entirely through Houdini's SOP-level nodes. Students gain practical experience with non-destructive, parametric modeling workflows that can be adjusted and re-iterated at any stage of the build.

About Course

Houdini Procedural Modeling Essentials introduces learners to the fundamentals of procedural modeling in Houdini through the creation of a detailed procedural house. The course covers building the basic structure, creating roof and architectural cuts, and adding windows, doors, stone bricks, and surface details. Learners will progressively develop their skills in procedural workflows and modular 3D modeling techniques. By the end of the course, they will have created a complete procedural house model with detailed architectural components and roofing.

Authorship and Attribution

This course has been curated by Riphah International University faculty and staff using publicly available third-party content and Open Educational Resources (OER) for self-paced learning. Learners will engage with curated open-access materials to achieve the course learning outcomes. What You'll Learn

  • Navigate the Houdini interface and understand SOP-level, node-based workflows.
  • Build primitive geometry and define basic architectural shapes procedurally.
  • Use cutting/Boolean operations to create openings for windows, doors, and the roof.
  • Apply scattering and copying techniques to add repeating surface detail such as brick and roof tiles.
  • Construct reusable procedural components, including window frames and door frames.
  • Assemble a complete, fully procedural building asset from a primitive shape to a finished model.

Prerequisites

Basic computer literacy and familiarity with mouse and keyboard navigation. No prior Houdini experience required.
